The West Wing is one of those great shows you can catch on TV late at night, and you expect it to be on when nothing else is. It is packed full of humor that almost anyone can relate to, and includes problems that real people can actually understand. Rather than watching some crazy soap opera with twisted story lines, The West Wing brings out the humor in everyday live even just by sitting in a coffee shop and chatting with friends.
The show West Wing was one of my favorite shows while it lasted. The cast was absolutely amazing and the characters were great. I totally give Martin Sheen a big thumbs up for his performance as the president. Though Martin Sheen was completely awesome, he was not the only one, the whole cast was to simply put it, the best cast in any drama series I have seen in a long time. The creator, Aaron Sorkin, also deserves credit for this wonderful show.
The West Wing is about the a new president’s term in office and his staff dealing with all that comes with being in the position that they are in. Along with political issues, the show deals with personal issues like the romances between characters and drug use that was a major plot line for a while. The first season was basically the president and his staff getting settled in and trying to make progress where it was needed. During the seconds season there was a scandal and alleged criminal conduct.
During the third and fourth seasons the characters dealt with campaign issues along with foreign and domestic terrorism. Then the fifth season brings more problems with foreign terrorism and dealing with the new Speaker of the House and federal financial issues. The sixth season begins the end of President Bartlet’s term in office and the quests that others have to take to replace him. The seventh season brings on the problem of a leak of information from within and the presidential candidates’ battle to take over the position.
The story starts with Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen, as The President of the United States in his first year of office, all of his staff and his wife. His wife and first lady to the White House is Abigail Bartlet, played by Stockard Channing, who is an outstanding physician. His personal assistant is Charlie Young, played by Dule Hill. Bartlet’s senior advisor, Chief of Staff and candidate for vice president was Leo McGarry, played by the late John Spencer.
Josh Lyman, played by Bradley Whitford, was Deputy Chief of staff. Kate Harper, played by Mary McCormack, held the position of Deputy National Security Advisor. Rob Lowe played Sam Seaborn, the first Deputy Communications Director and then Joshua Malina played Will Baily, the second Deputy Communications Director. C.J. Cregg, played by Allison Janney, was the Press Secretary.
The New York Times says “The prolongation of one of the best and most popular dramas on television is brave and at times bold, but often it is painful to watch.”
